ESMA: Steven Maijoor addresses Global Innovation Institute on new technologies in capital markets
The Chair of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), Steven Maijoor, has delivered a keynote speech on financial technology – New technologies within and beyond capital markets – at the AFME/Euromoney Global Innovation Institute conference in Paris (19 September 2018).
The speech focused on technological change in capital markets, financial innovation, and the challenges and opportunities that new technologies present to regulators.
– New links between firms and investors: FinTech firms, automated advice, pricing differentiation based on personal characteristics (insurance credits) versus fair treatment of financial customers;
– AI-powered investment and trade execution strategies, with machine learning tools used by portfolio managers to help predict price movements;
– New tools for supervisory authorities to protect investors: algorithms enable supervisory technology (SupTech): AI-powered surveillance of market conduct;
– RegTech: new technology allowing financial market participants for more automation in regulatory and compliance reporting.
